How Cayman Residents Get Married

Getting married as a Cayman Islands resident is an uncomplicated process, and the same rules apply for Caymanians, permanent residents, and work permit holders.

To begin, we ask our clients to come into our office at 8 Palm Road in George Town. After a brief interview to determine that there is no impediment to the marriage taking place, we will provide you with a Notice of Marriage (NOM) and post your banns. The Marriage Act states that all persons who reside in the Cayman Islands for more than 15 consecutive days must be married through a Notice of Marriage. Once the banns have been posted for seven clear days, the marriage may take place. Unchallenged banns are good for 3 months from the date of publication, and the wedding may take place at any time during this period.

We ask that both persons seeking to get married attend our initial meeting and that they bring with them the following documents:

  • Passports for both parties

  • Work permits or residency documents (if applicable)

  • Proof of dissolution of any previous marriages (divorces, annulments, or death certificates)

  • Notarized translation of the above (if issued in a language other than English)

Prior to the wedding taking place, you must return your completed NOM. This must be signed by both parties and witnessed by two adults over the age of 18; these witnesses should have known you for at least 2 years and may not be relatives of yours. Your NOM is then kept on file, should the validity of your marriage be questioned in the future.

Once your marriage has taken place, we will register your documents with the General Registry. Simply Weddings will guide you on how to obtain your Registered Marriage Certificate. The Marriage Certificate is an internationally recognized document that confirms proof of your marriage.

Please note that there is a non-refundable booking deposit of CI$50 to reserve your wedding date and time. Please call us at (345) 949-9933 or email us if you have further questions.
